What makes this different from a retailer filter?

A normal store filter usually starts with categories the retailer already sells: width, price, material and brand. That can be useful for browsing, but it does not answer the more important question: which documented greenhouse is the best fit for this particular project? GreenhouseMatch starts with the physical site constraint, then looks at intended growing use, climate-management priorities and product evidence.

The catalog currently normalizes greenhouse configurations from multiple product families rather than assuming that a nominal “8×12” or “10×20” label is exact. Manufacturer and distributor pages show why this matters. A product can be sold in a familiar size class while its actual width, length, peak height, vent package or included components differ from another product in the same class.

1. Actual footprint is checked before scoring

Space is the first hard constraint. The Finder uses the cataloged exterior width and length and checks both normal and 90-degree-rotated orientation. If the greenhouse exceeds the maximum footprint either way, it does not appear in the ranked results. This prevents a visually attractive or well-documented product from scoring highly when it simply does not fit the site.

Do not treat this as a foundation layout. Exterior product dimensions are only the start. Allow for door swing or sliding-door access, eaves, gutters, assembly clearances, foundation dimensions, setbacks, utilities, paths and whatever your local project requires. Verify the exact current installation drawing before preparing a pad or ordering materials. 2. The size target is a preference, not a fake exact match

A selected 8×12 target tells the Finder that roughly 96 square feet is the intended capacity class. Products near that area receive stronger size-fit points, while products that are somewhat larger can still rank if they fit the site. A product far below the selected target is excluded because it would undermine the capacity decision that produced the target in the first place.

This also avoids a common shopping mistake: equating a nominal label with usable space. UGA Cooperative Extension recommends thinking about benches and walkways when choosing greenhouse width and notes that floor area must be divided between growing space and access. The Size Calculator uses that planning concept; the Finder then uses actual catalog dimensions rather than assuming the label is the footprint.

3. Climate priorities change what “good documentation” means

If you select heavy snow or high wind as a concern, the Finder gives additional ranking weight to configurations for which numeric manufacturer-published weather information is stored. It does not decide what snow or wind design value your location requires, and it does not interpret a marketing figure as universal building-code certification.

Published values can also conflict. GreenhouseMatch keeps a conflict visible rather than silently choosing the larger or more attractive number. The catalog, for example, can record that different current manufacturer materials publish different values for a configuration. That product may still be useful, but the discrepancy becomes a verification item in its result card.

4. Heating and glazing are treated as planning tradeoffs

For heated use, the Finder gives more weight to configurations with a relatively more insulation-oriented glazing construction in the current catalog. The internal envelope classes are intentionally comparative—basic, moderate, strong or very strong. They are not claimed R-values, U-factors or energy certifications.

A double- or multiwall panel can be a more sensible starting point for some heated projects than a basic single-layer or clear-panel configuration, but real heat loss depends on surface area, panel construction, joints, infiltration, inside/outside temperature difference and installation details. In the Finder, heating intent remains a product-fit signal rather than a full heat-loss calculation.

5. Price is deliberately separate from Finder ranking

The product catalog can retain dated observed-price fields for maintenance, later comparison pages and project-cost tools, but the Finder does not currently display or score price. Current price coverage is not consistent enough across all cataloged brands and configurations to make a maximum-budget filter trustworthy. A greenhouse with no comparable verified price should not be treated as cheap, expensive or less well documented simply because the manufacturer does not publish a direct retail price.

Assembly tolerance remains a ranking preference. A large high tunnel, premium glass greenhouse and compact rigid-panel kit can all be legitimate choices, but the effort, site preparation and installer requirements are not equivalent. The Finder uses a broad assembly class to surface that tradeoff. It is not a promise of assembly hours or a substitute for the current installation manual.

How to read a result card

Match score

A deterministic buyer-fit score based on the inputs and documented catalog fields. It is not a review rating or quality score.

Data confidence

A separate completeness indicator. Missing dimensions, ventilation, weather data or source detail can lower confidence without declaring the product bad. Price availability does not affect Data Confidence.

Why it matched

The strongest factors that helped the product rank, such as footprint use, crop-height fit, glazing preference or published weather information.

Tradeoffs / verify

Important mismatches, limited ventilation, source conflicts or other facts that deserve verification before purchase.

What the Finder deliberately does not do

Those limits are intentional. A smaller catalog with traceable evidence is more useful for an expensive purchase than a much larger list built from guessed or copied attributes.

Research a brand after the Finder narrows the requirements

The Finder scores exact catalog configurations against your inputs. If several results come from the same manufacturer family, use the brand pages to understand the series-level differences before comparing individual models.

How does the Greenhouse Finder choose matches?

It first removes cataloged products that exceed the entered footprint. The remaining products are ranked across space/size target, growing goal, heating plan, climate priorities, crop/use, glazing preference, structure preference and assembly tolerance. Retail price is not currently a Finder input because comparable verified price coverage is incomplete across the catalog. The calculation is deterministic and documented rather than a hidden AI recommendation.

Does a high match score mean a greenhouse is structurally safe for my location?

No. It is a buyer-fit score, not structural approval. Verify the exact product, configuration, anchoring, installation instructions, manufacturer documentation and applicable local requirements.

Why can two greenhouses in the same size class rank differently?

Because actual dimensions, height, glazing, ventilation, weather documentation and assembly characteristics differ. Nominal size is only one part of the decision.

Do affiliate relationships affect the score?

No. Commercial destinations are assigned after product data are researched. Affiliate economics do not add or remove ranking points.
