The foundation is not simply the material under your feet. It supports the greenhouse frame, keeps the base level and square, and provides a path for gravity, snow, wind and uplift forces into the ground. Before excavation or concrete work, confirm the exact model, exact base dimensions, anchor locations, door threshold and extension configuration. An 8×12 nominal product may not use an 8×12 foundation, and adding an extension can move anchor points or change the overall base.

Manufacturers commonly require a solid, level base because an out-of-square foundation can make glazing, doors and roof members difficult to assemble. UMass greenhouse site-planning guidance also emphasizes drainage: a relatively level site with modest slope can reduce site work, and the greenhouse area should be kept above surrounding runoff rather than acting as a basin.
Do not “fix” a poorly drained site by choosing a heavier foundation alone. Surface water still needs a route around and away from the greenhouse. Before pouring concrete or installing a timber perimeter, establish final grade, drainage and where roof runoff will go.
A full slab combines a floor surface with a possible structural anchor substrate. A perimeter footing or grade beam can support the frame while leaving the interior as gravel, pavers or growing soil. A proprietary foundation frame can anchor the greenhouse while the interior remains independently surfaced.
Choose the structural base first from manufacturer and site requirements, then choose the greenhouse floor around drainage, cleaning, crop system and accessibility. Keeping those decisions separate prevents a common planning error: selecting a floor material and assuming it automatically solves anchoring.
The best foundation is only useful if the greenhouse is correctly connected to it.
