Choose a greenhouse floor for drainage, access, cleaning and growing workflow—without confusing the interior surface with the structural foundation or anchoring system.
A greenhouse floor has to manage water, foot traffic, mud, weeds, cleaning and the way plants are grown. It may also affect cart or mobility-device access. But the floor does not automatically anchor the greenhouse or carry its structural loads.
Plan the foundation and anchoring first. Then choose the interior surface. A greenhouse can have a structural perimeter foundation with gravel inside, a slab that functions as both floor and anchor substrate, or a manufacturer foundation frame with pavers or soil inside.

Create a firm modular walking surface while allowing targeted replacement and design flexibility. The base below them still needs to drain and remain stable.
Durable, cleanable and easy for carts when finished correctly. Drainage slope, drains, frost/site movement and the greenhouse anchor detail must be planned before the pour.
Intentional for in-ground crop systems and most high tunnels. Paths still need mud and weed control, and the greenhouse structure needs an independent anchor/base plan.
Greenhouses routinely receive irrigation water, condensation and tracked-in moisture. UGA hobby-greenhouse guidance notes that gravel, crushed stone, concrete, brick and other materials can all be used, with hard surfaces easier to walk on and loose surfaces more absorbent. Oklahoma State's greenhouse-floor guidance adds an important distinction: standard concrete is durable but does not inherently drain through the surface, while porous concrete is designed to allow drainage but has different strength and maintenance characteristics.
The practical question is not simply “does this material get wet?” It is where does the water go after it reaches the floor? A gravel layer over poorly drained soil can still become saturated. A flat slab can puddle. Pavers can settle if the base is unstable. Plan final grade, drains or swales, roof runoff and the greenhouse base elevation together.
Floor material, excavation, base aggregate, edging, drains and walkways can be a meaningful part of the installed cost.

A small hobby greenhouse does not need to be all gravel or all concrete. One durable center path can serve the door, cart and potting area while side beds remain soil or gravel. Pavers can create stepping and work zones without hard-surfacing the whole greenhouse. Under benches, an absorbent or free-draining surface may be more useful than a polished walkway.
This is where the Layout Planner becomes useful. Reserve the aisle and work zone first, then decide which surfaces need firmness and which need drainage or growing access. The floor should support the workflow rather than dictate it after the greenhouse is built.
Do not add several inches of aggregate or pavers after the greenhouse is assembled without checking the door threshold, base profile and drainage. Raising the interior can trap water at the perimeter, bury frame components or reduce clearance under a door. A slab poured too high can create the same problem.
Establish the final floor elevation before the foundation is finished. On a kit greenhouse, compare the assembly drawing with the proposed floor build-up. If the manufacturer specifies a solid base or minimum edge distance for anchors, keep that structural detail independent from whatever decorative or walking surface is installed inside.
Loose gravel that is comfortable for a gardener in boots may be frustrating for a small cart, walker or wheelchair. For public, workplace or mobility-device access, choose the surface and aisle width from the applicable accessibility and building requirements rather than relying on hobby-greenhouse examples.
A hard, well-drained center path can improve everyday use even when formal accessibility is not required. If that changes the needed aisle width, update the layout before buying the greenhouse so the growing beds do not become unusably narrow.
The best floor depends on drainage, cleaning, accessibility, crop system and budget. Gravel or crushed stone can drain well; pavers can provide a firmer modular surface; concrete can be clean and accessible when it is properly drained. Soil may be intentional where crops are grown in the ground.
Gravel can be an interior floor or drainage layer, but it does not by itself answer how the greenhouse is structurally supported and anchored. Verify the exact foundation and anchoring system separately.
Concrete is useful when a hard, cleanable and accessible surface is a priority, but it is not mandatory for every hobby greenhouse. Drainage, finished elevation, anchoring and where plants will be grown should be planned before pouring a slab.
A separation or weed-control fabric can be useful in some gravel-floor assemblies, but the correct build-up depends on soil, drainage and the intended loads. Do not let fabric or gravel trap water against the greenhouse base.
